1. Why climate protection and how does it work?
Protecting the climate is and remains one of the great challenges of our time, especially in tourism. At Poppe Reisen, we are very aware of this and take responsibility as a company.
Because sitting out climate problems through ignorance or repression is not a solution. It is better to become aware of your harmful emissions, for example by calculating your CO2 footprint, to reduce them and ideally to stop them. However, as long as it is not yet possible to “turn it off” (not travelling is of course not an option for us…), CO2 offsetting is the best way to neutralize emissions quickly and very effectively.
The climate doesn’t care how and where it is protected. The main thing is that it is protected. If unavoidable emissions are released into the air in one place, but are saved in another place through an additional climate protection project, the climate balance is more or less in equilibrium. Climate protection agencies make use of this connection, and you and we can use it too.
Since 2021, Poppe Reisen has been offsetting all its own organized trips, on land, on water and in the air, in cooperation with our partner “natureOffice”.
2. Our partner natureOffice
natureOffice, based in the small town of Hochheim in the immediate vicinity of Mainz (keyword “Support the local”), has been one of the leading providers of climate protection solutions, in particular climate neutrality, since 2007. We decided to work with natureOffice because we have a personal and direct line to them and, unlike other providers, they manage their own projects, not only internationally, but above all locally here in Germany.
For detailed information, please visit the natureOffice website at www.natureoffice.com
3. You support these climate protection projects
Climate protection projects are more than just offsetting emissions – they are an important means of combating climate change, protecting the environment and promoting quality of life. Meaningful carbon offset projects do much more than just protect the climate, they have a real, positive impact on the lives of the people in the project region.
When you book a trip with Poppe Reisen, Co2 compensation is included in the travel price and your money goes towards these projects:
Reforestation
Reforestation projects revitalize degraded landscapes, create habitats for biodiversity and contribute to carbon sequestration. They promote the local climate, improve the water balance and soil quality. They also strengthen socio-economic development in the regions by creating jobs and improving the quality of life.
Solar energy, hydropower, wind power
Solar energy projects harness the power of the sun to generate clean and renewable energy. They help to reduce CO₂ emissions, make us less dependent on fossil fuels and promote a sustainable energy supply for a greener future.
Hydropower projects use the energy of flowing or falling water sources to generate electricity – clean, reliable and emission-free. They make an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions, promote regional energy supply and often create local jobs.
Wind power projects involve the construction and operation of wind turbines, which provide a sustainable source of energy by converting wind energy into electricity. The turbines are often installed in windy regions to maximize energy efficiency. The benefit of wind power projects lies in the environmentally friendly generation of energy, as they do not require fossil fuels and therefore do not cause any CO₂ emissions. They make a significant contribution to the energy transition, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and also create regional jobs.
Energy efficiency
Energy efficiency projects, on the other hand, ensure that we consume less energy. We are replacing old technologies with more economical ones that work just as well. This applies to many areas, from household appliances to large factories.
4. The practical application
We calculate the climate protection contribution per trip individually based on the service providers involved and use the calculators of renowned institutions such as Atmosfair for flights and Myclimate for boat and train journeys.
For purely land-based trips, we have worked with natureOffice and our partners to determine a sensible fixed contribution.
For all booked travel packages, we list the calculated carbon offset contribution in a statement and pay the corresponding total contribution per quarter to our partner natureOffice.
If you have any questions about the climate protection contribution, please do not hesitate to contact us! We would also like to thank you for your help in keeping our planet liveable and worth traveling in for future generations!
